Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Aaron Zimmerman with Bear Chiropractic here in Grand Rapids, and today we’re talking about something that affects just about everybody at some point in their life. Lower back pain. Whether you’ve dealt with it before, or you’re dealing with it right now, this one’s for you. So let me ask you something. Have you ever woken up in the morning, rolled out of bed, and felt that familiar tightness or ache in your lower back? Maybe it happened after a long day at work, or after a weekend of yard work, or honestly… sometimes it just shows up out of nowhere. You didn’t do anything dramatic. You just… bent down to pick something up, and suddenly your back decided it had enough. You are not alone in that. Lower back pain is one of the most common reasons people come through our doors here at Bear Chiropractic. And the good news? Most of the time, it is very treatable. So let’s talk about why it happens in the first place. Now, here’s the thing. A lot of lower back pain comes down to a few key causes. The first one is muscle strain and ligament stress. This is probably the most common culprit. When you lift something heavy, move awkwardly, or even sit in a poor position for hours on end, you put stress on the muscles and ligaments that support your spine. Over time, or sometimes all at once, those tissues get irritated and inflamed. That’s when you feel that deep aching, that stiffness, that soreness when you try to move. The second major cause I see is what we call joint dysfunction in the lumbar spine. Your lower back has a series of small joints called facet joints that connect each vertebra together. When those joints stop moving the way they should, whether from poor posture, repetitive stress, or just the wear and tear of daily life, they can cause pain, stiffness, and even referred discomfort down into the hips and glutes. This is actually a big part of what chiropractic care addresses directly. And the third cause, and this one surprises people, is a sedentary lifestyle. Sitting for long periods, especially with poor posture, puts a tremendous amount of pressure on the lower spine. Most of us are sitting way more than our bodies were designed to handle. And when the core muscles that support the spine get weak from lack of use, the spine itself has to pick up the slack. That leads to overload, fatigue, and pain. So what can you actually do about this? Here’s some practical advice you can start with today. First, move more. Even short walks throughout the day make a real difference. Your spine loves movement. It actually gets its nutrition through movement. So get up, stretch, walk around. Set a reminder on your phone if you have to. Second, pay attention to how you’re sitting. Your feet should be flat on the floor, your hips at about a ninety degree angle, and your screen at eye level. Small adjustments in your setup can take a huge load off your lower back. And third, strengthen your core. You don’t have to go to the gym for this. Simple exercises like bridges, bird dogs, and gentle abdominal work can go a long way in supporting your spine. Now, when should you come see us? If your pain has lasted more than a few days, if it’s getting worse instead of better, if it’s spreading down your leg, or if it’s affecting your ability to sleep or do your daily activities, that’s your sign to get evaluated. Don’t just push through it and hope it goes away. The sooner we can identify what’s actually going on, the faster we can get you feeling like yourself again. At Bear Chiropractic, we take the time to really understand what’s driving your pain. We’re not here to just pop your back and send you on your way. We want to figure out the root cause and build a plan that actually helps you long term. If you’re in the Grand Rapids area and you’ve been dealing with lower back pain, give us a call or check us out online. We’d love to help.
